Includes item from Boston Evening Transcript, Oct 8 Refers to a handbill circulated widely in the city. Indicates that “The Post of this morning” claims that the handbill was circulated by friends of Garrison, assuming it would encourage sympathy for him. The Liberator maintains that is not true: “We are apprehensive that the handbill emanated from another and very different source ….The Liberator was surrounded last night by a dense mob, breathing threatenings which foreboded a storm.”

Then the handbill itself, with a title, “BOSTONIANS AWAKE!!

“The true American has returned, alias William Lloyd Garrison, the ‘Negro Champion’,…from his disgraceful mission to the British metropolis …..He has held meetings in London and slandered the Americans to the utmost of his power,…. And also countenancing the outrageous conduct of Daniel O’Connell …..Americans! Will you brook this conduct? I think not! He is now in your power – do not let him escape you, but go this evening armed with plenty of tar and feathers and administer him justice at his abode at No. 9 Merchants Hall, Congress St.”
A NORTH ENDER
Boston, Oct 7, 1833
A note follows with a finger pointing at it: The Transcript and Morning Post will receive their deserts in due season.”

The story of an Anti-Abolition meeting, Jan 22, with the Mayor acting as President. The meeting refers to the foundation of the nation and the discussion of the fact that the South “was found in possession of a kind of property which did not exist to any extent in the Middle and Eastern states; after a full and thorough discussion the compact of the union was consummated, leaving to the slave states, the discretion of settling the momentous question in their own way, and in their own good time; the implied guarantee was thus promulgated, that slave property should be held sacred by the Constitution, and protected by the Laws.”

At this meeting Birney was heard in defense of the Abolitionists, but shouts and accusations hurled at him made it impossible for him to complete his defense. The anti-abolition resolutions were passed. Discussion includes references that the whole history of the negroes shows that they are incapable of freedom, and that “They would be better off in slavery.”

South Carolina Presbytery & Methodist General Conference The S.C. Presbytery asserts that:

“Slavery has existed in the Church of God from the time of Abraham to this day. Members of the church of God have held slaves bought with their money, and born in their houses, and this relation is not only recognized, but its duties are defined clearly in both the Old and the New Testaments.”

With these words, and several separate resolutions, the body affirms the Christian right to own slaves. Then from the Methodist General Conference, meeting in Cincinnati, May 13: A resolution adopted disapproves “in the most unqualified sense, the conduct of two members of the General Convention, who are reported to have lectured in this city recently, upon and in favor or modern abolitionism.” Ayes 122, Nays ll

Here are the first sentences of the paragraph:
“The citizens of Alton, Illinois, are unlucky enough to have among them somebody that styles himself The Rev. Elijah P. Lovejoy, who it seems is also editor of an abolition newspaper called the Alton Observer, in which he inculcates the beautiful doctrines of that beautiful fanaticism. The citizens have determined that they will not suffer their pleasant and prosperous town to be kept in hot water by any such minister of mischief, and have appointed a committee of six to wait on the reverend brawler and tell him so. If he really loves joy and wishes not to sup a little of its counterpart, he will probably take the hint. ….”

Jan 15, 1838, from the National Intelligencer, comes the report of an address by Robert Barnwell Rhett, to the people of Beaufort and Colleton Districts, upon the Subject of Abolition.

The speech includes: “That the south has a right, under the Constitution, to the peaceable enjoyment of her slave institutions, no one will deny; and if the Constitution is perverted from the purposes for which it was made, and proves inadequate to protect the South from aggression upon this vital institution, none but an abolitionist, open or secret, in the North, or a traitor in the South, could fail to come to the conclusion that the Constitution ought to be amended, or the Union be dissolved. To acknowledge the right, or to tolerate the interference at all with this institution, is to GIVE IT UP –TO ABANDON IT ENTIRELY; and as this must be the consummation of any interference, the sooner it is reached, the better. …..”
