Here are remarks of Charles Sumner, urging that “in the organization of the volunteer military companies of the Commonwealth, there shall be no distinction of color or race”. Sumner maintains that such a move would be in accord with public sentiments in the Commonwealth, and would also be “consistent with the Constitution of the United States.”
