Under the Refuge of Oppression column, appears an item from the Cleveland Plain Dealer, indicating that it is an “exposition of Buchanan Democracy”. “The Republican party will have it that when the framers of the Declaration of Independence asserted that ‘all men are, by the grace of God, created free and equal’, they meant negroes as well as white men, and consequently this party are now engaged in the laudable work of equalizing blacks and whites in regard to political rights and social privileges. ‘The Democratic party take issue with these latter-day Republicans on the original intent and meaning of this phrase ‘all men’, and contend that the framers …were sincere and consistent men, and that the late decision of the Supreme Court is in conformity with their views and the Constitution.’
