The mind cannot be enslaved

Early issues of the Liberator often posted on the upper left of the front page, quotes from noted persons, giving strength to the abolition cause.  This one is on the June 25, 1831 edition.  “Slavery is incompatible with the very nature of man and the welfare of society.  The inextinquishable mind of man can never be wholly enslaved.  Attempts may be made to crush it, but it will burst forth, like a smothered volcanic fire, and dissolve the fabric of society.”   Sandwith
