493 Slaves for Sale in New Orleans

GREAT SALE OF HUMAN BEINGS   “The U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Louisiana advertised to sell at public sale in New Orleans on the 20th ult., four hundred and ninety-three slaves, of both sexes and all ages, from infants to old age.   Among the number is one old man, called ‘Samson’,  aged 111 years.  So says one of our exchanges….We should like to know what right U. S. Marshals, or other U. S.. officers have to be engaged in this nefarious business of selling men, women and children at auction? …. And this in the year of our Lord 1850!”  from Mohawk Times  (Liberator, July 19, 1850, pf 3)
