Abbott Lawrence, manufacture in Virginia

July 24, 1846

Under Refuge of Oppression, there is an article from the Boston Daily Bee, titled,  Southern Manufactures versus Southern Slavery.   It is in response to criticisms of Abbott Lawrence, who in a series of letters has encouraged the establishment of factories in Virginia.  There has been a complaint, that, in these letters, Lawrence does not mention slavery.  The unidentified writer of this article commends Lawrence, and argues that if the southern states were encouraged to build factories, it would lead to the “removal of the hateful institution which alone makes labor servile.” The writer believes that Lawrence, by encouraging manufacture, will do more to end slavery than abolitionists.
