“The era of emancipation of eight hundred thousand slaves in the West India Colonies, by the fiat of the British Parliament, is rapidly approaching; and it ought to be observed throughout this country, by all who truly love justice, liberty and equality, with unusual demonstrations of gladness — a gladness dashing with sorrow, however, in some measure, on account of some of the provisions of the Emancipation Bill, yet real and exalting, in view of the peaceful, bloodless and happy death warrant of British slavery….” (Liberator, July 18, 1835, pg 3)
