Call for abolitionists to practice what they preach

Here is An Appeal in a letter from “A Garrison Abolitionist”, Newburyport, August 10,

1837:   ” I have been highly amused to see the effect of the Clerical Appeal, on certain persons who are loud in professions of attachment to the cause, but who fail altogether in practice.  There are many who belong to the Anti-Slavery societies, who will talk very well, but when the time comes to act they fall back. ….their actions plainly prove  the truth of the old proverb  — it is much easier to preach than to practice…….”
