Celebrating West Indies emancipation. August lst

“The colored people of Boston will celebrate the entire emancipation of their brethren from Bondage in several of the British West India islands, on the 1st of August next, by a public meeting to be held at the Baptist meeting house in Belknap Street. …”   (Liberator, July 27, 1838, pg 3)    A follow-up item in the August 3 Liberator, pg 3 includes an account of the gathering.  John T. Hilton presided, and the account lists other leaders, including Rev. Samuel Snowden, A. A. Phelps, William Cooper Nell, Amasa Walker,and Rev. Beman, of Hartford, Connecticut.
