“Accounts from St. Thomas, the 24th September, inform us that a Royal Decree has been issued, for the abolition of Slavery in the Danish colonies. All slaves under sixteen years of age are declared absolutely free from the 18th of September. Those above that age are to be held in the condition of apprenticeship for four years from that time.” (Liberator, November 19, 1847, pg2 )
