Death of Justice Taney

Death of Chief Justice Taney.  The intelligence of the decease of the historically infamous author of the Dred Scott Decision, which took place in Washington on the 12th, after a short illness, is received by the entire loyal, liberty-loving portion of our county with perfect resignation.  It was a mockery of all law, and a disgrace to the nation, to have such a man at the head of the Supreme Court; besides he was unfitted for his station by extreme age — 88 years.  His successor will, in all probability, be Salmon B. Chase, of Ohio, for such is the general wish.  The case of impartial liberty will gain immensely by the change.”   (Liberator, October 21, 1864, pg 2 )
