Only part of our impressions, last week, contained the mournful intelligence of the death of LAFAYETTE, which took place on the 20th of May. He was in the 77th year of his age.
He was the consistent enemy of slavery in all its forms and colors. How he regarded the oppression which reigns in this country, may be seen in the following expression of his feelings:
‘’ When I am indulging in my views of American prospects and American liberty, it is mortifying to be told that in that very country a large portion of the people are slaves.! IT IS A DARK SPOT ON THE FACE OF THE NATION. Such a state of things cannot always exist.”
This single expression should embalm the memory of Lafayette in the hearts of the colored population throughout the globe to the latest posterity.
