Death of Samuel Snowden

The January 23, 1851 Liberator records the death of Snowden, at the age of 85.  “Many a colored mariner, who has sailed from the North to southern ports, would have been sold into slavery, had not Father Snowden promptly interposed his word of Christian benevolence  …. For many years, his house has been resorted to by the victims of American slavery, on their way to the British dominions.  On this day of his death, October 8, 1850, thirteen fugitives arrived, seeking that sympathy for which his name had become so famed, but which could no longer be rendered.
