Estimate of war “costs”

The Raleigh (N.C) Progress gives an estimate of the number of men enlisted in the South, and either killed or disabled during the war.   Totals– Enlistments  1, 124,000  — Dead and disabled  — 660,000

Is it not an awful computation ?  — and yet this frightful number probably far below and actual aggregate!  How terrible a price the South has paid for her madness!  How great is the crime of the few reckless and ambitious  politicians who led the led the people into this wicked rebelion!
