The Raleigh (N.C) Progress gives an estimate of the number of men enlisted in the South, and either killed or disabled during the war. Totals– Enlistments 1, 124,000 — Dead and disabled — 660,000
Is it not an awful computation ? — and yet this frightful number probably far below and actual aggregate! How terrible a price the South has paid for her madness! How great is the crime of the few reckless and ambitious politicians who led the led the people into this wicked rebelion!
