Garrison at Fort Sumter

April 14, 1865

The article tells of the invitation by from Secretary of War Stanton, inviting Garrison to be present at the re-raising of the Flag of the United States, on Fort Sumter.   The article is written by S. M., and becomes the occasion of recounting some of Garrison’s accomplishments. “A nation, schooled by the terrible lessons ….which this four years’ war has forced upon her—–now gives honor to the man and to the cause, which before it scorned and loaded with reproach….And this is the real significance of Mr. Garrison’s presence at Fort Sumter, on this occasion of national rejoicing and triumph. It tells of a regenerated public sentiment, of a new moral purpose and life in the nation……”
