Hot-headed fanatic good for his daughter!

Garrison had a very close bond with his daughter Helen Frances, named for his wife.   Frances was known as “Fanny”.  In an 1866 photograph she is shown with “her cheek pressed against her father’s temple and her arm wrapped casually about his neck in a gesture of unsurpassed tenderness that speaks volumes about their bond.  In her smile it is possible to see still the little girl who, riding gaily on the editor’s shoulders and warming her cold hands on his large bald head, never failed to laugh at his jesting remark that a hot-headed fanatic was good for something.” (Source: All on Fire, by Henry Mayer, page 355)
