Persecution of Arthur Tappan by Abolition Foes

“If the amount of persecution that a man suffers for righteousness’ sake be the test of his devotion to God and love to his Savior, then Arthur Tappan is the best man in the United States.  A Southern paper states that three thousand dollars have been offered for his ears; and the Richmond Compiler says that the sum of $20,000 has been made up in New Orleans, as a reward to be paid for his delivery upon the levee in that city!…..”  (Liberator, September 19, 1835, pg 3)
