Successor to Webster in U.S. Senate

July 26, 1850

An item from the Ohio A.S. Bugle, indicating that “the term for which this base man was elected to the U.S. Senate ends on March 4th, 1851”   It is hoped that he will be defeated in any attempt to be re-elected.

Comment by the Editor:  “The unexpected appointment of this servile lick-spittle of the slaveholding oligarchy to the office of Secretary of State will, of course, prevent any action being taken upon his course by the next Legislature, but we think the conviction was universal, that his re-election to the Senate was out of the question.   Massachusetts spurns him.”
