West India Islands Emancipation

June 5, 1846  

A record of the actions of the New England Anti-Slavery Convention, May 26, held at Faneuil Hall, includes a resolution presented by Garrison, and adopted by the Convention.:  “…we are filled with the spirit of rejoicing and hope in the remembrance of the emancipation of eight hundred thousand slaves in the West India Islands…. and girding ourselves afresh for the great revolutionary conflict which is before us, we will press onward until the last chain is broken, the last slave is set free, and the song of jubilee is heard throughout our borders….”
