A Garrison view of Henry Clay

In the March 17, 1843 Liberator, Garrison comments on the fact that in state Convention, the Whigs of Virginia have declared their preference for Henry Clay for the Presidency.  “This is quite natural, he being both a duelist and a slaveholder, and thus eminently qualified for that high station, according to the standard of American patriotism and morality in the American Dominion. Miserable expectants are they whose hopes are based on clay!”
