Under Refuge of Oppression, here is an article from the Pilot, decrying the existence of slavery, but much against the radical abolitionists. “The abolitionist party are a wretched set of bungling politicians and moralists; impracticable dreamers and wild enthusiasts; bad reasoners and worse actors; offensive bigots and ferocious intolerants; pretending Christians and brawling infidels, in fine — half-madmen and half-philanthropists… Out of such a heterogeneous mass of opposites, no wonder the worst influences have flowed against the slave, and been to him like a false light on a stormy coast — leading him on with trust, until his hopes are shattered…..:”
