Cent-A-Week Societies collecting funds

“Cent-A-Week Societies appear to operate very successfully in many instances as a means of collecting funds.  Witness the following from the Voice of Freedom:  The Montpelier Anti-Slavery Society was organized a year ago.  The Treasurer informs us that the collection for the last month was $7.07 –for the whole year, $32.57.  Most was collected by two or three ladies.  The money in Montpelier the year past has been about $100. For the year to come, we stand pledged to pay at least $500….”   (Liberator, May 10, 1839, pg 3)
