George Garrison, with the 55thRegiment, at fall of Charleston

February 21, 1865,  George marched, with the Mass. 55th Regiment, into Charleston, greeted by thousands of cheering black people. James Redpath,  a war correspondent,  reported that , amid the joyful noise, he heard a lieutenant give the order, ‘Shoulder arms’, thought he recognized the voice, and turned to shake the officer’s hand.  Who do you think he was ? — “The son of William Lloyd Garrison!”    (All on Fire, Henry Mayer, page 577)
