Left-Over from mob action of 1835 (no help from Mayor)

Remembering the event of the previous October, when the sign of the Anti-Slavery Society office was destroyed, during the mob action of Oct. 21st, by a crowd of “gentlemen of property and standing”.   Here is an account telling of the replacement of the sign, “although not by  the Mayor and Aldermen….. They have deliberately refused to restore its value! … What an outrage upon the rights of inoffensive citizens!  It  was deemed a very suitable mode of commemorating the 21st by our Society, by putting up the sign alluded to, which is so large that he who runs may read it…”
