Missionaries on American Slavery

April 18, 1856

A statement signed by three missionaries of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, declaring that “American slavery is among the potent hindrances to the prevalence of the missionary spirit in the American church, and thus to the speedy conversion of the world…”  Their statement is intended to counter the contention that “some endeavor to give the impression that those connected with the American Board, if not favorable to the institution, are, at least , indifferent to active efforts for its removal….”
