Priggs decision in Supreme Court

March 10, 1843

“….The whole tone of the decision is marked by the assumption that the preservation of the blessings of slavery, and not of liberty, to themselves and their posterity, was the guiding purpose of the framers of the Constitution; and to the accomplishment of that great end, all the rights of the inhabitants of the free states must be sacrificed.  If this be indeed the meaning of the Constitution which our fathers purchased with their blood, the battles of the Revolution were fought in vain…… may we all exclaim with one accord, and with earnest purpose, LET THE CONSTITUTION PERISH!…… MAY THE UNION BE SHIVERED, AND THAT SPEEDILY, INTO A THOUSAND FRAGMENTS!”
