Excerpts from an Oration by Emerson, on the occasion of a commemoration of West India Emancipation.   He spoke of the gentle and generous nature of the African, and drew graphic descriptions of cruelties practiced upon this race ….he said that slavery was not merely founded upon avarice, “besides the covetousness, there is a bitterer element, the love of power, the voluptuousness of having a  human being in complete control”
