Repeal of Fugitive Slave Law

From the Worcester Spy, an article reports that  the United States House of Representatives has passed a bill repealing the Fugitive Slave Law by a vote of eighty-two to fifty-eight.  “The bill had already passed the Senate, and now only awaits the signature of the President to become effectual … Viewed in all its aspects the Fugitive Slave Law was probably the worst law ever enacted by the American  Congress.  There is no light in which it can be made to appear justifiable.  It was an act of unmingled baseness and cruelty…..”    (On the same page of the Liberator, June 17, 1864,pg 3, another article includes a list of the votes by the various legislators.)
