In the first of the editions of the Liberator, it was clear to readers that Garrison was acquainted with some respected international philosophers. Here is a sample of a quotation from the Scottish political philosopher, Brougham, prominently placed at the top of the left column of the first page, Jan 22, 1831: “Tell me not of right — talk not of the property of the planter in his slaves. I deny the right — I acknowledge not the property. The principles, the feelings of our common nature, rise in rebellion against it. Be the appeal made to the understanding or to the heart, the sentence is the same that rejects it.”
