Under the title, Call For A Meeting on Behalf of Indians, there is an item in March 2, 1860, Liberator. “The Undersigned have heard or read, with shame and regret, of the outrages committed by our border settlers upon the Indians”. There is reference to a California paper, the Tahama Gazette, which says, in part, “we learn that twenty men, armed with rifles and revolvers, have been hired and paid according to the number of Indian scalps they obtain, as proof of the number they kill.” It calls for a meeting on Monday, March 5 at 8 p.m. at the Music Hall. Admission will be ten cents, to help with expenses. Signers include Garrison and Longfellow.
