In the February 12, 1831 Liberator, here is an example of Garrison’s policy to invite into its columns critiques of his views about abolition, and to promise response. In this edition, a column is headed OPPUGNATION, followed by this promise: “We sincerely wish that the dimensions of our sheet bore any proportion to the magnitude of the cause we espouse. Here are two articles (they appear in the column), which deserve an elaborate reply — especially the Vermont one; but we have not room to a line in self-defence. Next week we shall pick them to pieces.”
