Colored Citizens oppose “separate school”

The August 10, 1849 Liberator includes a record of a July 23  gathering of a “large number of people” at the Smith School.  Resolutions include phrases such as “exclusive schools are injurious to the welfare of the community, and therefore should be discontinued” … and that the Smith School is “a Great Public Nuisance, which should be immediately annihilated”.   The meeting adopted an “Appeal” to the Colored People of the City, to the Honorable Mayor, and the Aldermen of Said City”.
