Call for Colored Citizens of State

July 30, 1858

Here is a call for the Colored Citizens of Massachusetts to meet in mass convention in the city of New Bedford, on August 2nd.   The purpose is, “to protest against the barbarism that oppresses us, the arrogance and brutality which so infamously ignore our manhood. There was never a time when a Convention such as is proposed was so much needed as now.”…   “Citizens from other states disposed to attend the Convention will be most cordially received.”   An appended note by the editor indicates that twenty-five delegates were chosen at a recent meeting held at the Twelfth Baptist Church.
