“It is with great regret that we record the death of Rev. RICHARD ALLEN, the first Bishop of the African Methodist Church, which occurred at Philadelphia on the 26th of March …. in every respect Bishop Allen was an extraordinary man. He labored incessantly throughout a long life, for the temporal and spiritual happiness of his colored brethren, and his efforts were crowned with success. The usefulness of his life was inestimable; his death will be in the highest degree afflictive. We hope some our friends in Philadelphia will write a sketch of his life to be published in the Liberator.” (Liberator, April 9, 1831)
