Discrimination on basis of color in Plymouth

August 1, 1851

William P. Powell, writes to Garrison, telling of being refused accommodations at the Samoset House, in Plymouth.  Garrison comments that Powell is a highly respected citizen of New York, formerly of New Bedford, that in the past year he has traveled in England, Scotland, and Ireland, where he has been well received.  This refusal of hospitality, on account of his complexion, “must excite the disgust and indignation of every generous mind.”
