Explaining the 12 year old “Refuge of Oppression” column

Explaining to new subscribers the purpose of the department of the paper called “Refuge of Oppression”.  “By the term ‘Refuge of Oppression’, we mean, of course, a retreat into which the enemies of freedom are gathered, in their distinctive character, and for an evil purpose; and we thus put the brand of condemnation on every article found in that department”.    (Liberator, January 8, 1847, pg 2)
