Garrison thanks Lydia Maria Child

In the August 10, 1833 issue of the Liberator, the editor announces the publication of Lydia Maria Child’s Appeal in Favor of that Class of Americans Called Africans. Child, a recognized novelist, in this writing comes out as abolitionist.   Garrison comments:  “A thousand thanks to Mrs. Child for this admirable work! We trust in God, that it will kindle a flame of sympathy on behalf of the people of color, which will not be extinquished until the system of slavery is utterly consumed, and the rights of the oppressed are restored.”  (Seldon’s note: the Athenaeum Library canceled Child’s membership.) !!
