James Forten responds to formation of NEASS

James Forten , leader among “colored” people of Philadelphia, among the very early supporters of Garrison’s Liberator, responded to the formation of the New England Anti-Slavery Society, 1832, with enthusiasm.  “On July 28, 1832, James Forten wrote Garrison to let him know how pleased he was to learn of the formation of the New England Anti-Slavery Society, a sign ‘that the public are awakening to a right feeling on the momentous question of Slavery, and the condition of the Free People of Color.’ ”  (A Gentleman of Color: The Life of James Forten, by Julie Winch,   page 255.
