Liberated Slaves at Beaufort (Port Royal Experiment)

May 2, 1862

A “Letter from One of the Teachers”, is signed, “E.W.H.”.  It tells of an arrival at Beaufort, and an early meeting with negroes at Ladies’ Island.  “..our first proceeding was to address the negroes, who collected in front of the piazza, as to what we should expect of them-namely, faithful work; and what thy might expect from us – good care, justice, and to be taught to read……everything looks bright for the future so far as our work is concerned, much brighter than I ever even dared to hope….”
