Abolitionism at Harvard

The Liberator of September 14, 1838, pg 3, has words about Harvard College.  “We are glad to learn that the leaven of abolitionism is working effectually in this time-honored institution.  An Anti-Slavery Society. composed of twenty undergraduates, was formed, we understand, several months ago; and some of the students occasionally exercise their freedom of thought and speech by enunciating unpopular truths upon the stage. Some of the performances at the late commencement, we are told,were quite “fanatical”, and manifested a regard for liberty which would have done honor the College in the days of Hancock, Warren and Otis ….”
