“The only compliment he (Garrison) cared to remember”

On Garrison’s first visit to England he met leaders of the British anti-slavery forces;  among them was Thomas Fowell Buxton.  Henry Mayer, in his All on Fire biography of Garrison, records that when the two first met, Buxton greeted Garrison “blankly”, because he had assumed that Garrison was a black man.  This, according to Mayer, was what Garrison said was “the only compliment he cared to remember”.
